Turtles in clear plastic

I don't think I have posted this image before, but if I have, please excuse my faulty memory.

These figures have been resting on a bookshelf in our hallway for the last four or five years. They were given to me by one of the Playmates guys -- I am embarrassed to say I don't remember which one. I think it was when a couple of our usual Playmates contacts came out to Massachusetts for a creative head-banging session in the early days of the TMNT toy line based on the 4Kids 2K3 TV series.

They brought with them these "first shots" of the figures, molded in a clear plastic, and I remember being very taken with this look -- there is something cool about being able to see inside the joints and so forth. So they left these samples with me, to my delight. -- PL

  1. Those are awesome, wish they were in my hallway. I would have to stop and look everytime I passed by.

A few question you dont have to answer:

With the up and coming release of TMNT at IDW have you been contacted for an interview?

Will you pick up the IDW series?

Will you check out the cartoon?

Are you tired of being bugged about vol 4?

On, a side note thank you for the past 25+ years of TMNT. I know this is the end of your era with them, but I know you will revisit them. Why else opt for 18 comics a year. I await your finished story with anticipation.

    thanks,
    tony

  2. Very cool. I concur about the unexplainable coolness of see thruogh figures. Thats why I liked posing and playing with the Mutagen Man figure from the original line because you could see right through him and dunk water in his body.
I'm proud to say I have the '88 and '02 original Michelangelo and Rapheal (duplicates of course)together on a shelf in my room.

    No.

I will definitely look at it, but -- given that I hardly buy or read ANY comics these days -- it's unlikely I will pick them up.

"Will you check out the cartoon?"

Probably -- at least the first episode or two. If it's really good, I might become a fan and watch it all.

"Are you tired of being bugged about vol 4?"

    Mmm… maybe a little bit.

You're welcome! I should probably just say this about the deal which allows me to do more TMNT comic books if I desire -- during negotiations for the sale, I pushed hard for that, because at that time I just could not see spending all those years shepherding this property and end up NOT having the right to at least do comics about them if I wanted to. It just seemed… wrong.

However, since the sale, over a year and five months ago, my attitude towards doing more stuff with the Turtles in comic book form (or any form, really) has changed. I just don't have a passionate desire to work with them right now. That could change, but I don't expect it to happen for a long time, if ever. I could be wrong… but I think I'm right. - PL

  4. As a Volume 4 reader, we'd love if, at least, you'd put up notes about how the series ended, and how the storylines finished. Even if it's as short as "The utroms cured Raph", short lines like that. Just so we can get the sense of closure from it.

Also, still waiting to figure out what Don snipped from Splinter's corpse, and why =P.

  5. If you ever get tired of looking at those, I would be more than happy to take them off of your hands :)

  7. Those are really cool. Shows how great those sculpts are as well.

I understand your feelings on the TMNT, but you're also still pretty early in being away from them. I really love that you were able to get those creator rights to do a few comics a year should you ever choose. It's something that might come to you years from now and had you not, it might have been a regret.

  8. I've always had an affinity for translucent action figures, I think it all started when I got the first X-Men figure of Iceman as a kid:

I'm a real sucker for anything like that, I've got a clear Gameboy that you can see the inner workings of, and in fact just yesterday bought this G.I. Joe figure that's similar:

Glad to see I'm not the only one enamroed with these types of things, it's a shame those TMNT we're only test shots, they would have made for a cool mail away offer.

  9. I would've like to have seen Playmates release these figures in a ''stealth mode'' line. Being co-creator of TMNT, you're so lucky to own them Peter!
